Application Form Guidance
- You will score higher, if you are able to refer to as many of the essential and desirable criteria as possible. A tip for doing this is to use the criteria as headings in your personal statement.
- Give strong examples – you can see how applications are scored from our person criteria.
- Using the STAR method can help when evidencing competencies and giving examples:
- Situation: the situation you had to deal with
- Task: the task you were given to do
- Action: the action you took
- Result: what happened as a result of your action and what you learned from the experience
- For your application to standout, spend time researching Liberty and the work we do (our website is a great place to start). Draw meaningful connections with your own motivations, work experience and personal experience.
- Be concise, keep your answers clear and to the point and avoid long sentences. Bullet points can sometimes work well.
- Try to use the full work count (but do not exceed it).
- Ensure your application is proofread for errors and set out neatly.
Positive Action
Liberty are committed to pursuing a diverse and inclusive workforce and are trialing a Positive Action approach to our recruitment and selection process. Positive Action allows employers to take action to minimise disadvantages that groups with particular protected characteristics face in the workforce.
In addition to anonymous application forms, some of the new ways we are attempting to level the playing field is by introducing the Guaranteed Interview Scheme and Anonymous First-Round Interviews:
GUARANTEED INTERVIEW SCHEME
The Guaranteed Interview Scheme will expand on our commitments as a Disability Confident Employer to offer an interview to an applicant who declares they have a disability and meet the minimum requirement.
We will be offering guaranteed first-round interviews for individuals who identify as:
- Disabled
- A member of the Global Majority (people from Black, Asian, Mixed, and other ethnic groups who often racialised as ‘ethnic minorities)
- A member of the LGBTQ+ community
AND
- Meet the median score for this role
You can take part in the Guaranteed Interview Scheme by selecting that you are a member of one of these communities on your application and agreeing to participate.
ANONYMOUS FIRST-ROUND INTERVIEWS
Anonymous first-round interviews involve candidates conducting their first-round interview online via zoom, with their camera off and microphone on. This is to reduce the scope of unconscious bias based on physical appearance and attributes. The interview panel will be on camera for the interview, and the second-round interview will be in person.
Any questions about the scheme and our positive action approach, please contact us at hr@libertyhumanrights.org.uk.
Liberty is looking for a creative and strategic lawyer to join its legal team. Strategic litigation is core to Liberty’s work. Our lawyers work closely with the rest of the organisation using casework and legal advice to help Liberty reach its strategic goals. You will be responsible for running a small caseload of strategic litigation, conducting interventions and providing specialist human rights advice. A large part of the role is identifying and then scoping potential cases, working closely with other organisations to develop the litigation in a collaborative and creative way.
If you are interested in a job that involves innovative legal work in the NGO sector, we would like to hear from you. We have deliberately not included a requirement for a certain level of PQE in the selection criteria as we are keen to hear from candidates with pre-qualification experience, including experience outside the legal sector. We are also interested in more experienced applicants who may not see themselves as a human rights lawyer, but are interested in moving into this area.
Liberty fully embraces flexible working and is committed to employee development. We aim to encourage people from all backgrounds to work with us and are particularly interested in hearing from people from minority backgrounds and all socio-economic sections of society. Liberty supports hybrid working, with a minimum of two days per week in the Westminster office.
For an informal chat about the role and to find out more about being a lawyer at Liberty, you can arrange to speak to Katy Watts, one of the lawyers in the team. Please email her at katyw@libertyhumanrights.org.uk to set up a call. This is not part of the selection process.
The deadline for applications is 12PM Friday 8 November 2024.
Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
Please be aware that we do not accept CV’s for this role. All applicants must complete the application form to apply.
First round interviews will be held on the week commencing 18 November 2024
Second round interview will be held on the week commencing 25 November 2024

We are working hard to ensure that our recruitment practices start to reduce any barriers for individuals who may wish to apply, and we recognise that the networks you have are likely to impact how much support you are able to access when you write a job application.
If you have any questions about your application or consider that you would benefit from having some additional support as you write your personal statement, please get in touch with our HR Officer/Head of HR, to arrange a short conversation on hr@libertyhumanrights.org.uk. Following this, we may be able to put you in touch with someone external to Liberty who could spend a short amount of time with you reviewing your application.
We only have a limited number of spaces available which will be given on a first come, first served basis following a short call to assess whether the support is likely to be of benefit to you. This will be entirely confidential, and the assessment panel will not know whether or not you have requested this support. The support will be of a general nature and the external person will not have any specific knowledge of Liberty or the particular role, beyond what it provided in the advertisement. The support is intended to place candidates on a level playing field rather than giving inside advantage. As such this support is suitable for candidates for whom:
During the conversation, we assess that:
- The role is a step up from a role they’ve previously held
- They do not have support networks of contacts and/or peers who can support them
Support to include:
- Proof reading and advice on presentation
- Suggestions around addressing the person spec and relevant examples
