Sharing information with the police: A guide for youth service providers
Posted on 25 Jun 2025
Youth service providers, such as teachers and youth workers, can often be approached by police officers who are working to gather information about young people in their care, or community. Unfortunately, youth service providers report feeling intimidated and obligated by the police to give up information, despite the potential harms that sharing this information may have on young people.
Liberty and Kids of Colour have published a new guide, setting out the rights of youth service providers when it comes to sharing information with the police in both formal and informal situations.
This guide includes information about:
- Whether youth service providers are required to share information with the police
- What can happen to the information that is shared with the police
- What youth service providers should consider before they share information with the police
