Liberty responds to Digital ID plans being dropped
In response to the announcement that the Government is planning to drop its plans for a Digital ID system, Akiko Hart, Director at Liberty, said:
“This is a victory for civil liberties in the UK. Digital ID was a solution in search of a problem and something the public repeatedly made clear they did not want – we are glad the new Prime Minister has listened.
“We know digital ID is not the only Government surveillance scheme people are rightly worried about. The new Prime Minister has a unique opportunity to win back the public’s trust by hitting reset and choosing to prioritise protecting our right to privacy across the board – instead of expanding surveillance and new technologies without meaningful safeguards or accountability in place.”
