Chair of Liberty steps down

Posted on 11 Jan 2022

In December 2021 Sonali Naik stepped down as Chair of Liberty, a role she had held since 2018.

As one of the very few Asian women silks at the Bar, Sonali wishes to concentrate on her busy practice. In the face of the Nationality and Borders Bill, the biggest assault on refugee law and practice in the last 70 years, and the attack on the Human Rights Act, she wants to focus on the challenges that her work presents, as well as her unexpected increased caring responsibilities.

For the past few years, Liberty has been working to build an inclusive and effective organisational and governance culture. This work will continue to be addressed by the Board under a new Chair when they are elected by the Policy Council in June 2022.

In the meantime, Rahul Sinha will be Liberty’s Acting Chair.

Sonali remains on the Policy Council on which she has served since 2004 and where her expertise as a human rights lawyer is invaluable to Liberty.
