Human rights advice

Liberty gives advice to members of the public on human rights issues. We would prefer that you contact us by phone – see the details of our advice line below. Alternatively, you can submit a written query using the form at the bottom of this page.

If your query is urgent you should call our Advice Line rather than submit a written query.

Before contacting our advice service please read these FAQs:

  • Can Liberty advise me on any legal issue?

Sadly, we do not have the resources to deal with all the written queries that we receive. We have to prioritise queries that raise human rights issues and that come within our areas of concern. If we are not going to be able to give a full response to your query, we will let you know as soon as we can and try to make suggestions for alternative sources of advice.

We can only advise on the law in England and Wales.

  • Will Liberty take on my case?

Liberty is a small organisation with limited resources. We receive a large number of queries but can only take up a very small proportion of these as cases. We focus our efforts on bringing test cases in the areas of law that are of greatest concern to us. We use our casework to achieve positive changes to the law. Most of our cases are brought under the Human Rights Act or using European human rights law.

  • I already have a solicitor, can Liberty advise me? 

We don’t think it a good use of our limited resources to advise people who are already represented by a solicitor. Your solicitor will know a lot more about your case and is in a much better position to advise you. You should raise any questions or concerns about your case with your solicitor.

  • Is my query confidential? 

We treat all queries as confidential, and will not pass on your information or details to anyone without your permission. In very exceptional circumstances, we may raise welfare concerns with a third party if we are worried that there is an immediate risk to your life or someone else’s.

  • How long will I wait for a reply to my written query?

Unless your written query is clearly urgent we will deal with it in turn. Due to the large number of written queries that we receive you may have to wait several weeks for a response.
