Resource for Educators on Prevent: Safeguarding Not Securitisation
Prevent Watch, in collaboration with Amnesty International UK and Liberty, have developed a new resource for educators around the Prevent duty, Safeguarding Not Securitisiation.
This 28-page guide addresses concerns raised by educators who want clearer information about their rights in relation to navigating the Prevent Duty, and how to uphold students’ rights while meeting their legal obligations.
Current government and school guidance on Prevent fails to adequately address the risks that the Prevent duty poses on student wellbeing and their human rights. Many educators are placed in a difficult position: asked to treat Prevent as part of safeguarding, while recognising that it can conflict with core safeguarding principles and may lead to rights being undermined.
Safeguarding Not Securitisation challenges common myths about Prevent in education and sets out key rights that should be considered before making a referral, incorporating lessons drawn from real case studies from Prevent Watch clients.
This resource will help educators better understand the potential harms arising from Prevent, and how to navigate Prevent through a more rights-based and true safeguarding approach.
The resource is available for download here.
