Liberty responds to third national COVID lockdown

Posted on 04 Jan 2021

Liberty has responded to the announcement by the Prime Minister today (4 January) that England will enter a third national lockdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sam Grant, Liberty head of policy and campaigns, said:

“We all want a pandemic response we can trust, and to be able to comply with public health guidance that protects us, our loved ones and our communities. For this to happen the Government must ensure that there are strict time limits on this lockdown, and that everyone is supported, can safely follow guidance, and is able to access public services without fear of immigration enforcement.

“Repeatedly springing new rules overnight with limited Parliament scrutiny erodes goodwill. The Prime Minister must learn from the mistakes of past lockdowns and stop focusing on draconian enforcement at the expense of public health.”
