Holocaust Memorial Day 2013

Yesterday was Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2013 – a day to remember all of those who died and suffered, not just during the Holocaust under Nazi persecution but in later genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Both yesterday and today, hundreds of HMD activities are taking place across Britain to remember the atrocities – and consider how individuals and communities can challenge ongoing hatred and discrimination.

Liberty urges Home Secretary to refuse domestic violence victim’s extradition to US

Today Liberty made an eleventh-hour plea to Home Secretary Theresa May in a final bid to save mother-of-three and domestic violence victim Eileen Clark from an extradition to the US which would breach her rights to private and family life and liberty under Articles 8 and 5, ECHR.

Of all the fundamental freedoms protected by the Human Rights Act, none attracts controversy quite like Article 8 – the right to respect for your private and family life. Barely a day passes without it hitting the headlines for apparently all the wrong reasons. Flicking through certain newspapers you would be forgiven for concluding that it exists only to shield foreign murderers and rapists from deportation.
