Liberty responds to Home Secretary's address to Conservative Party Conference

04 October 2016

In response to Amber Rudd's speech to the Conservative Party Conference this afternoon outlining the Government's immigration policy, Martha Spurrier, Director of Liberty, said:

"How disappointing to see the new Home Secretary settle for more of the same - the approach that has succeeded only in stoking fear and division in our communities.

"Migrants and BAME people are suffering unprecedented verbal and physical abuse on our streets as a direct result of stigmatising speeches like this.

"Instead of aligning herself with the Home Office's appalling record on race relations, she should concentrate on undoing its toxic legacy. Ending the shameful practice of indefinite immigration detention and fulfilling the Government's promise to bring unaccompanied refugee children to safety on our shores would be good places to start."
