Dismantling of the Calais refugee camp: Liberty's response

29 February 2016

Responding to today's news that French authorities have begun dismantling part of the Calais refugee camp, Rachel Robinson, Liberty's Policy Officer, said:

“The desperate need of refugees, including unaccompanied children, is being met with bulldozers and water cannon on our country’s doorstep – and our leaders continue to look away. The Government cannot keep relying on geographical accident to justify its moral abdication and avoid its obligations.

“Many of those in the camp have family here – the Government must allow their claims for asylum to be determined here and work to provide safe and legal routes to the UK for those in need of protection.”
