International Women's Day

Happy International Women’s Day! The day where we celebrate women’s struggle for equality through history and all over the world.

There have been great advances over the years but would the Pankhursts be satisfied with what has been achieved?

70 per cent of those living in poverty are women and in too many countries women still battle for equal rights. However awareness is a milestone on the road to change and the day will be marked across the globe with events, lectures and discussions.

The Women of the World festival, which begins today and runs over the weekend, includes an impressive list of speakers from the spheres of politics, popular culture and activism. Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts, Eve Ensler, Camila Batmanghelidjh, Erin Pizzey and Helena Kennedy are just some of the women who will be appearing at the festival – and of course our own director, Shami Chakrabarti, will be at a number of the events over the four days. The festival will cover issues as diverse as domestic violence, sustainable business, Mary Whitehouse and Margaret Thatcher.
